Herbert Boyer and Stanley Cohen
Catalysts of GMO Technology
("DNA Double Helix," n.d.)
In the first half of the 20th century, scientists experimented with hybrid seeds and selective breeding to try to improve yields and resistance to diseases and insects. In breakthrough research in 1973, Herbert Boyer and Stanley Cohen created the first genetically modified organism (GMO), using a process called recombinant DNA. This new area of biotechnology was a significant turning point in the history of the agricultural and pharmaceutical fields, leading to increased crop yields and new drugs.
